The USN Bookstore is undergoing some changes under new leadership.
Since beginning in July of 2023, Grace Ann Lukach ‘03 has begun the process of process of transforming the bookstore into a Spirit Store that encapsulates the environment of the community, and students.
Lukach took over the role from Susy Gillette, who served in the role from 1993-2023. Gillette was a parent of two USN alumni and the spouse of the late Gus Gillette, a theatre teacher.
Every two weeks, new merchandise like Varsity Jackets, Owala water bottles, Windbreakers, and USN cheerleading outfits are brought in. Lukach is also in the process of launching a new website, replacing the outdated 2007 version. This new website will showcase all USN merchandise, ensuring an accessible way to purchase these items.
Lukach’s vision for the store is clear: diversity and inclusivity.
“I’d like to have a little something for everyone,” she said. The merchandise is made to reflect the diverse styles and preferences among the USN students. From varsity jackets to windbreakers to youth sized cheerleading outfits, the store offers a wide range of apparel that is suitable for both middle schoolers and high schoolers.
The Spirit Store finds its most customers during snack time for the middle schoolers, as a result of the recently added Capri-Suns, which were requested by the eighth graders. The store also has a variety of snacks, including Sunchips, Cheez-its, Gogo Squeezes, fruit snacks, Doritos, sparkling waters and Prime drinks.
One of Lukach’s primary goals is to create a boutique-like experience for the students. She envisions the store as more than just a retail space; she wants it to be an experience.
“I wanted it to feel like a little show,” she said.
The store does feel like a curated showcase of USN spirit and style. From the moment one walks in, they are greeted with an array of merchandise that reflects the vibrant spirit and pride of the USN community.
Lukach’s commitment to the USN community goes beyond just providing quality merchandise. She sees her role as a way to contribute to the Tiger community and bring her personal touch to the store.
“How can I help the community and bring my personal touch?” she ponders.
For her, it lies in making sure the school is well represented with its merch outside of the USN walls. She aims to create a sense of belonging and unity, where every member of the USN community feels represented and connected through the spirit store.
While the great merch and snacks makes the USN Spirit Store awesome, it is Luckach’s enthusiastic attitude, amazing work ethic, and motivation that is what really makes the store special. Her ability to take requests, comments, and concerns makes it a welcoming environment, and a great opportunity to represent the USN community as a whole.
