Olivia Brown ‘27 and I believe that everyone should be able to have a place to explore their uncommon interests with others who find similar appeal in the same area.
This is why we started the True Crime Club this year. In our club, people can freely discuss true crime cases without fear of judgement that may come from others, and can create a tight knit community.
This welcoming environment sets us up to have productive meetings where we analyze cases, listen to podcasts, watch documentaries, play games, and learn new things.
Some activities include board games, creating and solving cases, making our own case files, and any other tasks suggested by club members. When discussing cases, we make sure to be mindful and respectful to the victims and their families as they did not ask to be a part of the case they are involved in.
Another aspect of our club is dissecting crimes and analyzing criminals. We dive into the childhoods and traumas of the offenders and, while we can never fully understand why they commit the crimes they do, we can assess how their environment might have contributed to their actions.
Olivia and I work hard to make each meeting enjoyable, engaging, and educational. We do not shy away from difficult discussions but we also understand there are heavy topics and we listen to concerns and allow time and care for those that need it. Furthermore, our meetings are filled with fun games and activities that can act as a well needed break in the middle of a long school day.
This club is a chance for anyone interested in true crime to pursue their curiosity and learn about and develop a new side of themself. I encourage everyone to come to Mrs. Riley’s room, 4120, on Mondays at lunch to learn about the true crime world with Olivia and me. At our meeting on September 29, we discussed the case of the Golden State Killer along with the mysterious case of The Axeman of New Orleans.
