Poetry has always been more than words on a page. It is a way to connect people across time and experience, to resist silence and oppression, to imagine new possibilities for living, and to heal both individual and collective wounds. At Poems Against Silence, we believe that poetry is not just a personal art form, but also a collective force for change. Our group provides a space where students can come together to workshop, write, and share their work in an atmosphere that is supportive, creative, and deeply engaged with the world around us.
At its core, Poems Against Silence is about building community. Every other Thursday, we gather in Ms. Sachs’ room to exchange ideas, write together, and explore how language can shape the way we see ourselves and our society. Whether you are an experienced poet, a songwriter, an activist, or simply someone who wants to engage with expression in new ways, there is space for you here. Our workshops are designed to help you grow as both a creator and a thinker.
But our mission extends beyond the page. We see poetry as a tool for social justice and community outreach. Our writing often grapples with issues that matter: identity, equity, climate change, mental health, and human rights. By amplifying diverse voices and perspectives, we hope to spark conversations that move people toward empathy and action.
One of the highlights of our year is our series of open mic nights, where anyone is welcome to share their work. These events are not only creative showcases but also celebrations of community. They will be done in collaboration with other groups, such as PeaceJam, and Student Theatre Guild. They are spaces where stories, struggles, and joys are spoken into existence and met with support.
Our first Open Mic will be on Thursday, October 30, beginning at 6:30 PM.
In Poems Against Silence, we believe, as my poem “The Revolution Will Not Be Branded” says,
“This world
was not broken
it was built this way.
But we are builders too.
Of better.
Of braver
Of after.”
It’s in these gatherings that we see the true power of poetry as activism: it brings people together, bridges differences, and reminds us that none of us are alone in our experiences.
If you’ve ever felt like you had something to say but weren’t sure how to say it, Poems Against Silence is the place for you. You don’t have to call yourself a poet to belong here. Come as an artist, a thinker, a dreamer, or simply someone who wants to listen. We invite you to join us, bring your voice, and discover how words can be both art and action.
